Thailand wins the Petanque medals, Laos and Indonesia occupy second and third positions respectively
SURABAYA—The superiority of the White Elephant Country team, Thailand in the 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG) XXI petanque sport which took place at the UNESA Petanque Field Campus 2 Lidah Wetan is unstoppable.
Since starting on 26 June, Thailand has dominated and closed the petanque competition by collecting 5 gold and 7 silver on Tuesday, 02 July 2o24.
In second place, the Laos team won 3 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze medals. Meanwhile, the host team, Indonesia, took third place with 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Furthermore, Cambodia managed to collect 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Meanwhile, Malaysia managed to gain 1 gold medal.
Thai petanque athlete,
Ratchata Khamdee, said that he was very proud to be able to bring gold to his
country. Although he was surprised by the time limit in the final which was
different from Thailand.
The coach of the Thai
contingent, Patawee Montien, said that they had been preparing for a month.
During the training period, athletes are guaranteed to train for 6 hours a day,
morning and evening.
He admitted that his team needed time to adapt to the type of lane here which is different from Thailand.
“Here we use cement, while in
Thailand the base is natural soil, so it's not too hard. So far, we always use
the time before the match starts for field testing to get used to it," he
concluded.

Nurkholis said that the petanque sport competed in a total of 11 events,
namely, 1) men's shooting, 2) women's shooting, 3) men's singles, 4) women's
singles.
Next, 5) men's triples, 6) women's triples, 7) mixed triples (1M+2W), 8) women's doubles, 9) men's doubles, 10) mixed doubles, 11) mixed triples (2M+1W).
"There are eight
countries competing for medals in this sport, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam,
Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand. In total there are around 81
participants involved. The competition system is the Swiss system," he
explained.
