SURABAYA—The 5x5 basketball
final match at the 2024 ASEAN University Games which was held at the UNESA
Basketball Hall, Surabaya, reached its peak on Friday, July 5 2024. The two
final matches, in both the men's team and women's team categories, featured tense
and determined action. from athletes.
In the men's team category, the
Philippines managed to beat Malaysia with a final score of 93-64, winning the
gold medal, while Malaysia had to settle for the silver medal. Meanwhile,
Thailand managed to beat Indonesia with a score of 59-48, winning the bronze
medal.
On the women's team side,
Thailand emerged victorious after beating Indonesia with a score of 47-37,
winning the gold medal. Meanwhile, Malaysia managed to beat Singapore with a
score of 66-43, winning a silver medal, while Singapore had to settle for a
bronze medal.
Chairman of the East Java
Perwosi Provincial Committee, Arumi Bachsin, expressed her pride in
Indonesia's game that day. "In my opinion (the match) today was good, yes,
their mentality really seemed to dominate the
field!" she said after the game.
According to her, success in a competition is not only determined by victory or defeat, but also by the acculturation of the athletes themselves. Arumi also emphasized the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and respecting opponents, as well as the mental strength and endurance of athletes.
One of the Indonesian athletes,
Dewa Ayu, who also won a gold medal for the Indonesian contingent in 3x3
basketball on June 28, highlighted the different challenges in this match.
“We have different practices,
different coaches, so sometimes we have to divide our time. That's the biggest
obstacle, yes, being confused during practice. In Basketball 5X5, we have to
adjust the playing time. So, we have to adjust the distance, time and tempo
when playing," she stated.
Even though there were several
challenges, he is grateful to be able to finish in her current position. “We
have fought and worked hard, and this is the result we got, in second place
(getting) a bronze medal. "I am grateful, proud and happy because we can
also give this medal to Indonesia," she added with a face full of relief.
On the Philippine contingent,
Jacko Bankale, the athlete who won the gold medal in the 5x5 Basketball event,
was very happy and congratulated the team. “We feel great and very happy
because all our efforts paid off. "Our preparations are all commensurate,"
he said.
Similar to the Thai contingent, Phanwasa Boonjun also felt happy after winning the gold medal for his country. “I am very happy and congratulate the team. We won both teams, both men and women. For you, Thailand.”
