SURABAYA–The Indonesian national wushu squad excelled at the ASEAN University Games (AUG). On Thursday, June 27, 2024, in the Ubaya Sport Center in Surabaya, they were able to donate 8 medals to the red and white contingent.
The eight medals won included three gold, three silver, and three bronze. Ferdiansyah Rainer Reinaldy won the inaugural gold medal in men's taiji quan, scoring 9,496 points.
The favorable trend continued, with Serat Naro Siregar winning the second and third gold medals in the men's Dao Shu number with the best score of 9,506 and Simon Andrea winning the women's Jian Shu number with the highest score of 9,840.
In addition, Hendy Irmanto Juan earned silver medals in the men's Taiji Quan number, Setiawan Alexandra Calista in the women's Taiji Quan number, and Muntu Jeremiah Mathias in the men's Dao Shu number.
Meanwhile, Sidharta Zefanya Adelia and Geraldine Patricia earned bronze medals in the women's Taiji Quan and Jian Shu categories, respectively.
Xiao Haidong, the wushu coach for the Indonesian contingent, responded positively to the team's satisfactory performance in the first match. He stated that these outcomes were consistent with the athletes' training regimens and hard work.
"This result is in line with our expectations, and we are satisfied. It's all due to the athletes' hard work," Xiao Haidong stated.
Seraf Naro Siregar, one of the gold medalists, confessed that he had prepared as much as possible. He stated that the coaching team's training plan was excellent, and that they could perform to their full potential at this AUG event.
Naro noted that because all of the athletes competed at ASEAN level, they were all equally formidable opponents. However, he agreed that Singapore was a difficult opponent. "Actually, perhaps Singapore is quite difficult, but if the level is ASEAN, more or less everything is good," he joked.
This inaugural match featured athletes from five ASEAN countries. Aside from Indonesia, there are Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam.
Because of this outstanding performance, the national song Indonesia Raya was sung three times in the four classes that competed.
