Four Flags Waved on the Chess Medal Podium at UPN Veteran East Java
SURABAYA- The
ability proof of Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia chess players at
the ASEAN University Games (AUG) was determined in the final match which took
place at UPN Veteran East Java on Monday, 01 July 2023.
At
the match, the teams from each country seemed determined to add more medals to
their respective contingents.
Out of a total of 12 numbers contested, the four countries mentioned above shared the medals. Singapore took 3 bronze, Malaysia bagged 4 silver and 7 bronze, then above them was Vietnam with 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
Furthermore, 8 golds were secured by the home team after dominating in the men's and women's categories in both blitz, rapid and standard systems. There were also 7 silvers and 1 bronze in Indonesia's medal tally.
Setyaki
Azarya Jodi expressed his pride after donating a gold medal for Indonesia.
"Of course I feel proud and happy to be able to donate a gold medal for
the red and white," he said.
Latifah
Laysa, the gold medallist in the women's individual category, also shared her
happiness. "I am very happy and grateful to be able to bring a gold medal
for Indonesia," she said.
Bach
Ngoc Thu Duong of Vietnam, who won the silver medal in the Standart Women
Individual category, said that practising almost every day for several months
was the key to her success.
"I
am very proud to participate in the AUG and hope to improve my chess skills in
the future," he said.
Lye
Lik Zang from Malaysia, the bronze medallist in the men's individual standard
category, said that the tournament was very challenging. He met opponents who
were better than him, but he was happy and motivated to win a medal.
"I'm
even happier after winning the bronze medal for Malaysia," he says
proudly.
Thus,
the ASEAN University Games XXI 2024 chess championship is not only a stage for
exciting competition but also strengthens friendship between students of
Southeast Asian countries.
The
success of the athletes in winning medals is also an inspiration for the
younger generation to continue to strive and excel in sports. Hopefully this
success can be a motivation for athletes to continue to practice and make the
nation proud in the international arena.[]
