Indonesia Wins Bridge, Singapore's Mainstay Athlete Beat the Host in Men's Team Final
SURABAYA– Beside chess, bridge sports is one of the sports that is thick with Foresight, Strategy, and high-level thinking tactics at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) XXI 2024. No wonder, if many people dub this sport as a brain sport.
At this AUG, bridge was held in the Surabaya cluster, precisely at the University of Surabaya (Ubaya) for four days, from June 27-30, 2024.
Based on the journey and the results of the match, Indonesia led the bridge sports champion podium after collecting 2 Gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze.
In second place, Singapore managed to collect 2 gold medals, and 1 silver. The East Timor contingent managed to increase their medal purse through this sport by collecting 2 bronze medals.
The competition was fierce, both Indonesia and Singapore showed dominance in the deciding round. The decline of world champion athletes who became Singapore's mainstay in sports made the medal race very stressful.
Indonesian Bridge coach Pangkerego Very said that his team had targeted three gold medals in the men's team party. However, during the final, they were unable to stem the Singapore team's strategy.
"Against Singapore in the final was very challenging. Moreover, they (Singapore) are strengthened by athletes who have won World Championships and several international titles such as Xue Heng Two and Timothy Wu," he said.
"Singapore is strengthened by world champion athletes, when in the preliminary round we won against them but in the final round the anti-climax and we lost," he continued.
However, this competition was an experience for Pangkerego Very and his team to measure the strength of the opponent and improve the team's ability in the next competition.
