Three Countries Sweep Gold in Judo Sports: Indonesia 10, Malaysia 3, and Thailand 2

SURABAYA– Squads of various countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia competed for 15 medals in judo sports which took place at the Airlangga Convention Center (ACC), Unair campus C, Surabaya. They presented their best performance in the deciding match of the mixed category on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
After going through the match which started on June 26, 2024, The team of host country, Indonesia showed its dominance by winning a total of 10 gold, 8 silver, and 4 bronze medals. Meanwhile, Malaysia won 3 Gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze.
The Thai team tried to rival the Malaysia team, but had to acknowledge the strength of the Malaysia country due to the difference in medal figures. In this sport, Thailand won 2 gold and 1 silver. Singapore managed to secure 3 silver medals, and 5 bronze.
Malaysian judo coach, Osman Bin Muhammad Nizam Yoroum stated that although his team did not win the gold medal in the team event category, they were very proud of the athletes ' hard work and great fighting spirit during the match.

He also revealed that his team will continue to prepare for the upcoming competition.
"The match was a bit dramatic, with the remaining energy, and also some injured players. We had a great match against the Indonesian team. Hopefully, in 2026 we can come back with the strongest team," he said with excitement after the mixed team match.
Tang Soon Oon, coach of the Singapore contingent, explained that strategy and technique were the main focus of his team's preparation. Improving physical fitness is key to success given the high level of competition. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the focus and motivation of his athletes in facing the challenges during the competition.
"We increased the quantity and hours of training, especially more on strength. Because we know our opponents are very strong. So, we have to improve our physical fitness before competing," he said.

Although Singapore won 3 silver and 5 bronze medals, he felt that his team had performed well, more than he expected. He hopes that the next AUG, his team can come back stronger and with a better competition strategy.
Janelle Tan Yi Shyan from Singapore, who won a silver medal in the WOMEN's-57KG category, stated that regular training almost every day for 3 months was the key to her success. The intense competition left her with a knee injury. However, that did not deter her, but instead made her even more determined in the competition.
Singapore's Melvin Loo, who won the silver medal in the MEN's 73 KG category, also revealed that the hard preparation and competition to determine the best athletes in his country was an important part of success at AUG 2024. He stated that besides being able to bring home medals, he also brought home valuable experience to look at the upcoming AUG with hopes and targets for more medals.
