Officially Opened by the Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, AUG XXI 2024 Competes 21 Sports with 250 Medals

SURABAYA-ASEAN University Games or AUG XXI 2024, were officially opened by the Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Ario Bimo Nandito Ariotedjo, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the International Basketball Arena, Surabaya State University (UNESA) Campus 2 Lidah Wetan, Surabaya.
Athletes, coaches, or officials from 11 ASEAN member countries appeared to fill the stands. They are ready to win 250 medals in the Southeast Asian Student Sports Week, which lasts until July 6, 2024, at a number of Surabaya and Malang venues (Suma).
Dito Ariotedjo expressed his pride because Indonesia hosted Southeast Asian Student Sports Week for the fifth time. According to him, the opening of AUG 2024 was lively, attended by all representative teams from ASEAN countries who competed in 21 sports.

He thanked all the stakeholders involved in realizing Indonesia as the host of AUG XXI 2024 with the theme "Unity in Diversity" so that the opening ran smoothly. Hopefully, the event, which was attended by thousands of delegates from ASEAN countries, ran smoothly and was successful for its implementation and achievements.
"We hope that this can be a unifier and adhesive for Southeast Asian countries, especially all athletes and coaches or officials involved, so that new relationships can be established that are stronger from this game," he said after the opening ceremony.
He also hopes that AUG will be a bridge of progress for the development of sports talents, especially among Indonesian universities, so that in the future, the best talents will make the country proud in world-level sports competitions.

President of the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC), Mohd. Ruslim Mohammed, said that AUG is a forum to produce the best university talents who will represent their country in various world-level sports events.
"AUG is important to develop and strengthen inter-state university sports talent. In addition, it fosters social competence and cooperation, collaboration, and solidarity between students across countries," he said.
He appreciated the committee and the stakeholders involved because AUG this time recorded a history in which the entire delegation team from 11 countries took part in all sports. “Like athletics, for example, which is followed by all countries. That is, more and more athletes are involved from year to year,” he said.
The chief executive of AUG XXI 2024, Nurhasan also known as Cak Hasan, said that his team, along with the ranks of related ministries, local and city governments, and the leaders of universities in East Java, have prepared everything for the smooth and successful biennial sports event as a miniature of the SEA Games.

There are four successes expected from this event, namely success in terms of implementation, achievement, community economic empowerment, and collaboration between universities in ASEAN member states.
"After the AUG is done, cooperation and collaboration will continue, such as in the form of an exchange (mobility program) between students and lecturers. In addition, it is also in the form of a double degree program between state universities in ASEAN. The collaboration is not only in the field of sports and sports achievement development but also in other fields,” said Cak Hasan, the rector of UNESA.
For your information, AUG XXI 2024 competed in 21 sports held at nine universities in Surabaya and Malang until July 6, 2024. The closing will be held at the State University of Malang (UM).
